My goodness it feels like just yesterday Sloane’s nursery was the first, and for the longest time only, room that we had actually completed in our home. It’s a strange moment as a parent transforming your baby girl’s sweet nursery into a “big girl” room. Sloane is the most excited to have a big girl bed and a bed frame. No doubt she has some concerns with where her dresser and chair will be going – for the record her dad does too LOL.
Before I get to the plan for the big girl room, I wanted to share her nursery. It’s a beautiful and simple room. I smartly kept it as a pretty blank canvas given the nursery has lasted for less than three years. I didn’t do much in terms of DIYs in here. I only utilized stick-on decals from amazon for the walls that were a mere $25.00 at the time I purchased them (linked below!). They were so darn easy to pop onto the walls. From Nursery to Big Girl Room
Now, transitioning from the nursery to the big girl room – here is the mood board in all of its glory! I am seriously excited for this one. I wanted something that would have some longevity, that wasn’t too toddler-esque (to try to maybe extend this room to last 6 years?!), but still be playful and a space she would enjoy.
When coming up with a design, I originally wanted this bed from Pottery Barn Kids. Eventually the bedframe popped onto my Facebook Marketplace feed (by total fluke) but it was in the wrong mattress size. This, however, gave me the idea to hunt down another bed frame to fit the mattress we got her. I eventually came across the Ella bedframe from Pottery Barn Kids. It’s about 7 years old (if not more!) but I knew that I wanted quality, all wood piece for her room. It also made it so much easier because I intend to DIY some end tables for her and the colour of the Pottery Barn Kid’s white is Benjamin Moore – Simply White. Colour match done.
I also picked panel moulding to match our bedroom and add some sophistication to the space, but I paired it with a playful wallpaper.
DIYing Sloane’s Nursery to a Big Girl Room
Ready for the DIY hit list for Sloane’s big girl room?! It’s a good one:
- Chair Rails
- Panel Moulding (like I did in our bedroom)
- Painting the chair rails, panel moulding, and walls below the wallpaper – wall colour to be pulled from the wallpaper
- Wallpaper (not peel and stick like the bathroom, but real live wallpaper!)
- DIY end tables (probably an Ikea hack!)
That’s the punch list so far. Then of course accessory shopping to decorate this pretty big girl space. I’m thinking a new curtain rod, curtains, perhaps a gallery wall across from her bed. I want to see how busy the wallpaper feels before I make any concrete decisions. So much of the inspiration for this room came from Faye’s room on Chris Loves Julia’s blog. I even found some similar bunny lamps that I will consider antique-ify-ing.
It’s a lot less simple than her nursery but I’m ready to make some bold choices – likely it’s a function of I’ve become braver and would be less intimidated to tackle a change further down the line…. hopefully way further, though. I hope you’ll follow along as I make these transformations!
