or as long as I have been cooking, which is a long time, I have been a non-stick cookware gal. When I was younger, I attempted cooking with stainless steel. Going off the fact that I was a pretty good cook, I figured I could easily navigate stainless steel. Well, guess who was wrong? I had no idea what I was doing and managed to simultaneously have the food stuck to the pan and charred to a crisp. Following that experience, it took me a while to lick my wounds (aka my ego). Cut to 800 years later - I've finally recovered. So when Caraway released a new stainless steel cookware set, I knew I needed to learn to cook with stainless steel to give the Caraway stainless steel set a proper review.

PS – there’s a discount code and a sneaky surprise (* cough* new release *cough*) at the end of this post!

Caraway Stainless Steel Benefits

For this Caraway stainless steel review, I first want to run through the benefits of stainless steel. The number one concern I’ve heard from my audience from past reviews, like this one, and comparisons, like this one, is about the lifespan of ceramic non-stick pans – they can be tricky to care for but if you do it properly, they can last over 7 years. However, if you take proper care of your stainless steel cookware, it can last for decades. Caraway’s Stainless Steel Cookware set is also naturally non-toxic and non-corrosive – a perfect way to ensure food on your dinner table is cooked with the cleanest cookware possible. Finally, if you’re anything like my husband and cannot figure out how to cook on lower temperatures, stainless might be for you: you’re encouraged to cook on higher heat with this set rather than with ceramic non-stick sets.

How to Cook Using Stainless Steel

Before we get into the full Caraway Stainless Steel Set review, you should know how to cook with stainless steel. If you don’t know how to cook with stainless, like I didn’t, I can tell you that you will dislike the set. But if you’re willing to learn, you will love it. If you know how to cook with stainless steel, skip over this part.

Firstly, pre-heating your stainless cookware to the correct temperature is crucial. Heat your stainless pans over medium heat for ~1.5 minutes with nothing in it. That’s right, do not add your oil or butter. After 1.5 minutes, get your hands under the running tap then flick water onto your pan to determine if the heat is right. If you’ve nailed it, the water droplets will dance and glide, remaining in droplets, over the surface. If the water sizzles, your pan is not ready. If the water droplets break up and evaporate quickly, your pan is too hot.

Once your pan is at the right temperature, wipe excess water away and add oil or butter. Then you’re ready. You’ve just prepared your stainless steel pan to have the perfect non-stick coating. Before you get too excited, know that stainless steel responds to heat changes quickly. If your pan gets too hot, turn it down just slightly until it readjusts. Drastic temperature changes will result in the non-stick magic disappearing.

My Honest Review of Caraway’s Stainless Steel Set

Not to brag, but I’ve aced stainless steel cooking school for the past few weeks to give a proper review of Caraway’s Stainless Set. Coles notes: I’m thrilled I finally learned to cook with stainless steel, and I think this is my new favourite set Caraway offers!

Caraway’s Stainless Steel Set comes with a 4.5qt Saute Pan, a 10.5″ Fry Pan, a 6.5qt Dutch Oven, a 3qt Sauce pan, lids for all, and their signature storage organizers for your pots, pans, and lids. The range of sizes in the set is perfect for our kitchen and family of four. If I only had one set of pots and pans (full disclosure, I have another set: the Caraway ceramic non-stick set LOL), this one would be perfect for our family. Since becoming a Caraway family, I haven’t needed another pot or pan size that isn’t offered in the set. So, in my opinion, Caraway sets are perfect if you’re starting to acquire high-quality cookware or if you’re looking to expand your cookware sets.

When it comes to cooking, I am fully in love with the Stainless set; the sear I have gotten on my meat, the beautiful caramelization on my veggies, and the perfect fried eggs have made my cooking school by trial all worthwhile. The heat distributes perfectly evenly in the pots and pans making my job as the cook a little bit easier.

You can tell the pots and pans (and lids!) are high-quality – there is some nice weight to them which keeps them firmly in place when on your cooktop. I’m guessing that also has something to do with the even heating and cooking.

This is where my true colours shine and some of you will think I’m the stranges and others of you will get me. Aside from the perfect range of sizes, the ability to cook extra delicious food, and the high quality of Caraway’s Stainless Steel set, my favourite part just might be how easily they come clean. A good soapy wash with a soft cloth or sponge and everything comes right off. Remember I went to stainless cooking school by trial so there were some burnt food incidents. That food washed right off!

Caraway’s Newest Release: Stainless Steel Gadgets

What we now know is that I’m giving Caraway’s Stainless Steel set rave reviews, but what we didn’t know – or maybe you figured it out by the photos – is Caraway just launched a new product: their stainless steel gadgets. The gadgets match the stainless steel set perfectly and come with a garlic press, pizza cutter, peeler, ice cream scoop, and a can opener. In the name of product testing, I had to test these out and before Caraway’s gadgets came into my life, I would use a knife when I needed to peel things and when I needed to cut pizza. I can honestly say that the peeler slid through the skin of yams and carrots like butter. Similarly, the pizza cutter was such a dream slicing through pizza. The garlic press can crush a ton of garlic at once and come apart to wash it – hello genius! The sleekness of the can opener and the ease with which it opens cans cannot be matched. Finally, everyone needs a high-quality ice cream scoop for those rock-solid ice creams that typically need 10 minutes to thaw before you can even get in there – this scoop can get in there and no one is waiting on dessert!

How do it compare to other brands like allclad?

    • Samantha

Great question. Fully disclosure, I don’t have a ton of experience with AllClad – I have one pot and while I like it and it does the job, I prefer the Caraway pot size offerings. The Caraway Stainless is also heavier than the AllClad. Caraway’s is 5-ply which you have to go for the Cooper version of AllClad to get that. The heat distribution seems similar but I found that the Caraway heated up quicker. I hope that helps a little bit! If I can snag more AllClad’s I’ll do a proper comparison one day!
